Updating Your Payment Method
How to change your default card, update expiring cards, and manage payment methods securely.
Keep your subscription active by updating your payment method when your card expires or when you want to use a different card. All payment updates are handled securely through Stripe's Customer Portal.
When to Update Your Payment Method
You should update your payment method when:
- Your current card is expiring soon
- You want to use a different card for billing
- A payment has failed due to insufficient funds or card issues
- You're switching from a personal to a business card (or vice versa)
- Your billing address has changed
Firebuzz will send you email notifications before your card expires, giving you time to update it and avoid any service interruption.
Updating Your Payment Method
To change or update your payment method:
- Go to Settings in your workspace
- Click Subscription
- Select the Billing tab
- Click Manage Billing Information
This opens the Stripe Customer Portal where you can securely manage your payment methods.
In the Stripe Customer Portal
To update your existing payment method:
- Find the card you want to update in your payment methods list
- Click the menu next to the card
- Select Update card
- Enter the new expiration date and CVV if only updating card details
- Update your billing address if it has changed
- Click Update to save the changes
You cannot change a card number directly. To use a different card, add it as a new payment method and set it as default, then remove the old card if desired.
Changing Your Default Payment Method
If you have multiple cards saved and want to use a different one:
- Open the Stripe Customer Portal via the Billing tab
- Locate the card you want to use for future charges
- Click the menu next to that card
- Select Set as default
Your new default card will be used for all future subscription renewals and charges.
Replacing an Expiring Card
When your card is about to expire:
- Add the new card (with updated expiration date) as a new payment method
- Set the new card as your default payment method
- Optionally, remove the expired card once the new one is active
This ensures there's no gap in your payment coverage during the transition.
If your card expires and you haven't updated it, your next payment will fail and your subscription will be marked as past due. Update expiring cards before the expiration date to prevent service interruption.
Updating Billing Address
Your billing address should match the address your card issuer has on file:
- Open the Stripe Customer Portal
- Click the menu next to your payment method
- Select Update card
- Update the billing address fields
- Click Update
Changes to your billing address take effect immediately and will be used for future invoices.
