Champion and Variant System
Understand how champions and variants work for A/B testing your landing pages.
Firebuzz uses a champion-variant system to help you test different versions of your landing pages and find what works best for your audience.
Understanding Champions and Variants
Champion
The primary version of your landing page. This is the version you consider your best performer or baseline.
Variant
Alternative versions created for testing. Variants can have different designs, copy, or layouts.
How It Works
Champion
Every landing page starts as a champion. The champion is:
- Your main landing page version
- The baseline for comparison
- The default shown when you open a campaign
Variants
Variants are copies of a champion that you can modify independently:
- Created from an existing champion
- Start with the same content as the champion
- Can be fully customized to test different approaches
The Testing Workflow
- Create your champion landing page and design it
- Duplicate by creating variants for testing
- Modify each variant with different elements to test
- Deploy variants in your campaign flow to split traffic
- Analyze which version performs better
- Promote the winning variant or iterate
Variants are set up within the campaign flow. How traffic is split between versions is controlled in the Flow Builder.
Visual Organization
On the landing page canvas:
- Champions appear on the left
- Variants appear to the right of their champion
- Lines connect variants to their champion
- Each has a distinct visual indicator
Node Types Visual Reference
| Type | Visual Indicator |
|---|---|
| Champion | Crown icon |
| Variant | Branch icon |
| Translation | Language icon |
Working with Multiple Champions
A campaign can have multiple champions, each with its own variants:
- Champion A: Product-focused page
- Variant A1: Different headline
- Variant A2: Different CTA placement
- Champion B: Story-focused page
- Variant B1: Long-form version
- Variant B2: Short-form version
This allows you to test completely different approaches, not just variations.
Selecting the Active Champion
When a campaign has multiple champions:
- Click on a champion in the canvas to select it
- The selected champion becomes "active"
- Active selection is saved and remembered
The active champion determines which variants and translations are displayed prominently.
Best Practices for A/B Testing
Test One Variable at a Time
For clear results, change only one element between variants:
- Headline A vs. Headline B
- Blue button vs. Orange button
- Long form vs. Short form
Give Tests Enough Time
Let tests run long enough to gather statistically significant data before declaring a winner.
Document Your Hypotheses
Track what you're testing and why:
- "Testing: Long headline vs. short headline"
- "Hypothesis: Shorter headlines increase CTR"
Consider Your Traffic
If traffic is low, run fewer variants to gather meaningful data faster.
Champion Promotion
When a variant outperforms the champion:
- Review the analytics to confirm the improvement
- Note what made the variant successful
- Consider making the winning variant the new champion
- Create new variants to continue optimization
Optimization is ongoing. Even winning variants can be improved with further testing.
